Chemical composition of SNCM420H:
Carbon (C): 0.18%–0.23%; controlling carbon content prevents brittleness caused by excessive levels while ensuring sufficient hardenability;
Silicon (Si): 0.15%–0.35%; enhances material strength and heat resistance;
Manganese (Mn): 0.60%–0.90%; increases hardenability and refines grain size;
Chromium (Cr): 0.90%–1.20%; forms stable alloy carbides, improving wear and corrosion resistance;
Nickel (Ni): 0.90%–1.20%; expands the austenite region and significantly increases hardenability, ensuring uniform properties in large-section parts;
Molybdenum (Mo): 0.20%–0.30%; refines grain size, inhibits temper brittleness, and improves high-temperature strength and fatigue life.
 
Optimization of Heat Treatment for SNCM420H Steel:
By precisely controlling the quenching (typically heated to 850–880°C) and tempering (550–600°C) processes, SNCM420H achieves an ideal tempered sorbite microstructure. This microstructure combines high strength with high toughness; the path of fatigue crack propagation becomes tortuous due to the obstruction caused by carbides, significantly reducing the rates of crack initiation and propagation, thereby extending fatigue life.
 
Ensuring Microstructural Stability of SNCM420H Steel:
Under cyclic loading, the material's microstructure resists stress concentration and deformation. The fine tempered sorbite structure reduces the tendency for micro-crack initiation, while the synergistic effect of alloying elements further inhibits grain growth at high temperatures. This ensures stable performance during long-term use and effectively addresses the challenges of dynamic stress in complex operating conditions.
