Applications of Cr12 Cold Work Die Steel
Cr12 is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work die steel widely used in the following fields due to its high hardenability, wear resistance, and minimal quenching distortion.
1. Cold Stamping and Shearing Dies
Typical Applications:
Manufacturing deep-drawing dies, blanking dies, and cold-cutting shears requiring high wear resistance and simple shapes (e.g., silicon steel sheet stamping dies).
Advantages:
High hardness (up to 60-64HRC) and wear resistance significantly extend die life, reducing costs associated with frequent die replacement. For example, when blanking hard, thin metals (e.g., silicon steel sheets), it maintains sharp edges and prevents chipping.
2. Cold Extrusion and Forming Dies
Typical Applications:
Matrix dies for cold extrusion (e.g., punches for aluminum part cold extrusion, recommended hardness: 60-62HRC).
Thread rolling dies and thread rolling plates (e.g., hexagonal die inserts for cold heading hexagonal head bolts, with a 10× lifespan increase after vanadium composite treatment).
Advantages:
High wear resistance withstands repeated extrusion friction, while minimal quenching distortion ensures dimensional stability, reducing debugging time.
3. Precision Complex Dies
Typical Applications:
High-wear, complex-shaped punches, matrix dies, and inserts in bending dies (recommended hardness: 60-64HRC).
Cold pressing dies for powder metallurgy and refractory brick forming dies (5-6× longer lifespan compared to Q235 steel).
Advantages:
Narrow kerf and low heat-affected zone characteristics result in superior edge quality, eliminating secondary machining and suitability for high-precision applications.
4. Measuring Tools and Tool Manufacturing
Typical Applications:
Precision measuring tools such as drill bushings, gauges, templates, and clamping plates.
Woodworking tools and low-speed cutting tools (e.g., hand reamers, saw blades).
Advantages:
High hardness and wear resistance ensure long-term dimensional stability, while hardenability guarantees uniform hardness in large-sized tools.
5. Special Material Processing Dies
Typical Applications:
Thermosetting plastic molding dies (requiring high wear resistance and strength).
Forming dies for spring steel plates with 0.5%-0.8% carbon content (hardness: 37-42HRC, with a service life of up to 220,000 cycles).
Advantages:
Corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability meet the processing demands of special materials, reducing die corrosion or thermal fatigue failure.
